We are blessed. Advent Day 19

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! Luke 1:41-42

Name of Jesus: Dayspring (Luke 1:78)
Symbol: Motherhood

Doing these devotionals has been good for me.  I've been learning what the Names of Jesus mean.  For example, I had never looked into what 'Dayspring' means.   It means daybreak, the rising of the sun - dawn.

The light of Christ has dawned upon us.  In the womb John the Baptist, filled with the Holy Spirit from conception, sensed this and leapt for joy at the imminent coming of the Son of God.  The Light of the World.

It is interesting that John the Baptist was filled with the Spirit from conception and Mary was filled with the Son of God Who IS God.  Not that I have any deep theological insight, just that I'd not really thought about it.  We all know that for the Christian, the Holy Spirit does not fill us until we are born-again.  Was John Elijah born-again?  Or was John a type of Elijah but not actually Elijah? Just a wondering.

Elizabeth recognises Mary as 'blessed among women' as did the angel.  Later (v.45) Elizabeth says: "Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord."  Mary believed and she is blessed because of this, it reminds me of Abraham who believed and it was credited to him as righteousness (Gen 15:6), just as we who believe are blessed through our belief in Christ.

Mary later says (v.48), "For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed." The name Mary comes from the Hebrew word 'mara' which means bitter and rebellious.  And yet, Mary, who is commended for believing, who says 'yes' to God - the antithesis of rebellion - is given a new name, and many churches do call her this: the Blessed Virgin Mary.  She is remembered for being blessed.

God gives us a new name to those who believe (Revelation 2:17; 3:12).  We are blessed because of Jesus.  The Dayspring has come - His light is upon we who once lived in darkness.

Come Lord Jesus!

Happy Advent.
