Born to twinkle. Advent - Day 4

He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars – if indeed you can count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’ Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:5,6

NAME OF JESUS: Bright morning star (Revelation 22:16)

We are children of promise.

The word translated ‘offspring’ here is the word ‘seed’. A seed holds a promise. Its dry brown husk belies the colour and life therein. But a seed needs something to unlock that promise – it needs soil, water and light. Also seed doesn’t only hold the promise of its own life, but within that seed is the hope of many seeds. Paul tells us that the seed within Abraham was not just his own son Isaac, but the seed of Jesus Christ and as children of the new promise - the new covenant - we too are Abraham’s seed (Gal 3).

Yes, a seed is full of promise and hope…and life. The Word of God is likened to a seed. Jesus is the living Word of God. We don’t hold the dry seed in our hands but the seed planted in our lives, if we allow God to water it, yields a crop of many.

We, like Abraham, when told of the promise ahead may have first received that news with faith and joy…but like Abraham, and Sarah, after time to think, that faith can often turn to doubt (Genesis16-17) –

“count the stars…so shall your offspring be”

Impossible. To count the stars. For a ninety year old to bear a son. Hahahaha. And they both laughed.

God can ‘restore the years the locust has eaten’ - sometimes He sends the wilderness to refine us, but He never leaves us there, if we will just lift up our eyes He will turn a barren wasteland into a fruitful valley; it's His promise.

Has God told you something would happen in your life that you first received with joy but now you can’t imagine it will ever happen? Let God water the dry soil of your life. The seed He planted will never die.  In the right season it will emerge - LIFE.

Not only would Sarah bear a child, but God told Abraham that his descendants would be greater in number than all the stars in the sky. Our God is about abundance. Life in abundance. We are one of that multitude of stars. We have descended from the first and brightest star – Jesus – the Bright Morning Star. The One who heralds the day, the end of night, the One whom we follow. And we too are to shine, it’s what God meant you to do, He gives you His light.

You might feel like one tiny weak pinprick of light, but on a clear night just look up. Like the wise men searched the sky for a sign and found the Bethlehem Star – so we tiny twinkling stars, small as we are, together we point to the One Who heralds the daytime. The darkness has been overcome. Our Bright Morning Star.

We were created to twinkle and abound.

Here for all your talent you may surely find a need,
Here reflect the bright and Morning Star;
Even from your humble hand the Bread of Life may feed,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Brighten the corner where you are!
Brighten the corner where you are!
Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar;
Brighten the corner where you are!
