God isn't interested in the letters after your name

...or your good looks, your physique, your money, your career, your position in life; He's only interested in your soul and your life in Him.

Our Assistant Pastor said something in Sunday evening's sermon that really made me think. He was recounting a conversation with a child in Children's church. This particular child said that they didn't believe that God made them, but instead they said they were made by their mother and father. He started to try to explain the whys and wherefores of how they were created by God, but he was getting nowhere, the children were just getting more confused. He stopped and realised what he was doing. Unless God gives us the words it is impossible to explain the ways of God through human understanding. He instead simply stopped explaining and said, "The reason I know God made man is because He said so." Scripture tells us God made man. End of discussion. We can either believe it or not.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

He then said that we are not meant to understand the whys and wherefores of everything that God tells us in the scriptures. Our only work is to believe. To believe on Jesus Christ, to have faith in God the Father and to trust in His Holy Spirit to reveal His Holy Word to our spiritually hungry and thirsty hearts.God does not complicate things or make things difficult for the everyday man to understand. If only intelligent men could grasp His ways what kind of God would He be? Where would that leave the uneducated or the unintelligent? God loves us all and wants to bring us all into life through Jesus.

If only intelligent men could come to an understanding of God then where would that leave Peter and John the fishermen?

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marvelled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13

When God uses unschooled ordinary men and women Jesus gets the glory, not men, not their education, not their works. Their wisdom is not their own, but belongs to God.

Even the well educated Paul considered his learning and his high standing as a Pharisee and Roman as rubbish (Philippians 3). He explains here in 1 Corinthians:

For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Jesus had no money of His own, no earthly education, no home to call His own...and yet He had the very wisdom of the Living God.

Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. John 7:14-16

We lay such store by these things in this world and yet Paul claimed they were refuse. If you look at the leaders of the established church today where are the unschooled ordinary men?

Something to think about...

  2. I know I've been struggling with trying to understand God's ways. And He reminds me (nearly every time) it's not mine to understand. And still I stubbornly try. :( I'm working on it.
